Love and Decay: Deer Ashes, Dear

Deer Ashes, Dear @ Divan Orange (4234 St. Laurent Blvd., Montréal), Sunday 22 Nov., 10PM, with Sapo and Gibbsitto.

The name is new(ish) but the music has been around for some time. Deer Ashes, Dear is the offspring of a solo project of Ben Brandes, frontman (or, one of several) of Montréal's The Unsettlers. The solo-project-turned-group-project now includes some familiar faces: Elie Jalbert, Dustyn Lucas and Genevieve Schreier, all from The Unsettlers. But Deer Ashes, Dear is not a recycling of the old Unsettlers material. The sound is similar (but in that good way, like the sounds of home), but the feel is slower and deeper, and perhaps a bit sadder (The Unsettlers' motto is Love and Whiskey, but I am told that the name Deer Ashes, Dear represents Love and Decay).
