Next Week on Canada Live: Ohbijou at Hillside and others

On weekday evenings at 7 p.m. CBC Radio 2 brings you Canada Live - with live recordings of concerts from around the country. I always thought though that more people might listen to the shows if they knew what/who was coming up and when. So, someone at Radio 2 now passes me the list so that I can pass it on to you. There's alot of good stuff coming up but you'll especially want to check out Ohbijou recorded live at Hillside on Wednesday.

You can also catch CBC Radio 2 (and 3 and hundreds more radio stations) in your iTunes, on your iPhone or through a variety of other media players. Visit our I Heart Radio page for details. You'll also find links there that will let you digitally capture radio - so that you can record programs that you aren't actually around to listen to.

There are also hundreds of recorded concerts that you can listen to on demand at Concerts on Demand.

Here is next week's Canada Live schedule

November 9 to 13: All in the Family -- Canada Live presents concerts featuring brothers and sisters, husbands and wives, and more. After all, a family that plays together, stays together!

Monday, November 9, 2009
concert 1: Nathan
recorded at the Park Theatre in Winnipeg
A real Winnipeg favourite, this quartet brought its urban-rootsy, homespun sound to the Park Theatre. Their guitars, banjo, accordion, bass and drums are topped by the sweetest vocals and enhanced, unusually, by the theremin. Their sound captures the duality of the prairies; it's at once contemporary and old-fashioned, dark and light, lonely yet cozy. The band features husband and wife team Keri and Devin Latimer, with Shelly Marshall and Damon Mitchell rounding out the group.
concert 2: The Haints Old Time Stringband
Recorded in the Barn at the Vancouver Island MusicFest in Courtenay, BC
A 'haint' is a southern expression for a spirit or ghost. And The Haints revel in the music of the past. They're an old time string trio with a fresh and dynamic sound featuring Appalachian style fiddle and banjo music, old time vocal duets, and rare classics you probably won't hear anywhere else. They've recently earned two Canadian Folk Music Award nominations, for Traditional Recording of the Year (for their first album, "Shout Monah") and Ensemble of the Year. Newlyweds Jason and Pharis Romero, plus Erynn Marshall, were right at home in the Barn at the Vancouver Island Music Festival. Canada Live was there to capture their spirited performance. Sit back, relax, and let yourself go back to a simpler time with The Haints Old Time String Band.

Tuesday, November 10, 2009
concert 1: The Duhks
recorded at the Park Theatre in Winnipeg
Fresh from a huge American tour, The Duhks returned to their hometown to give a concert for their adoring fans. They play selections from their newest CD, "Fast Paced World", which was nominated for a Juno and a Western Canadian Music Award, plus some arrangements of some old favourites. The band's newest members are the brother-sister team of Sarah and Christian Dugas, and they add a special new sound to the mix.
Genre: roots.
concert 2: The Sicilian Jazz Project
recorded at Sun Fest in London, Ontario, July 12, 2009
The Sicilian Jazz Project is the brainchild of JUNO Award nominee Michael Occhipinti, and it creates dazzling, multicoloured jazz pieces out of traditional songs from the 1954 Sicilian field recordings by ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax. With this project, Michael and his bassist brother Roberto Occhipinti pay loving tribute to their family's heritage and make amazing music too. The Project brings together some of Canada's finest jazz musicians - Roberto Occhipinti, Ernie Tollar, Kevin Turcotte, Louis Simao, Barry Romberg - and Italian traditional vocalists: Dominic Mancuso and Maryam Tollar. You'll hear the inspired results in this set recorded live at Sun Fest in London, Ontario.

Wednesday, November 11, 2009
concert 1: Ohbijou
recorded at the 2009 Hillside Festival in Guelph, Ontario
Since the release of their debut album "Swift Feet for Troubling Times" in 2006, Ohbijou have played festivals across Canada and gained both fans and critical acclaim. The band started with two sisters, Casey and Jennifer Mecija, then grew from there. Ohbijou was nominated for the 2007 Galaxie Rising Stars Award and in 2008 they were chosen as one of three bands for the Banff Centre's first Indie Band Residency programme. The band now returns with their highly anticipated followup CD called "Beacons". Canada Live brings you highlights of Ohbijou's performance at the 2009 Hillside Festival in Guelph, Ontario.
concert 2: Jason and Sheldon Valleau
recorded as part of the 2009 TransCanada Alberta Music Series at the Epcor Centre's Engineered Air Theatre in Calgary
Brothers Jason & Sheldon Valleau are the songwriters and principle performers in the band called the Polyjesters. The Valleau brothers still base their performing and recording career close to their hometown of Didsbury, Alberta. They've toured the USA, Europe and Canada and sailed on a few cruise ships with their take on old time jazz, novelty and pop music. They also run the Mountainview Music Festival in Carstairs Alberta, an internet radio station and they have plans to open a coffee shop in Carstairs - with entertainment of course!

concert 1: The Rankins
recorded at The Halifax Metro Center
It was in 1989 that five siblings from the village of Mabou on Cape Breton Island released their first recording and became known to the world as the Rankin Family, Canada's most celebrated musical family. On February 28th, 2009, The Rankin Family wrapped up a 20 concert reunion tour of Canada at the Metro Center in Halifax, NS. The tour was in celebration of the release of their new CD, "These Are The Moments". They were at their very best at the end of a tour in front of a hometown crowd of over 5,000. One of the best nights ever to record a group that has been one of Cape Breton's most popular exports for 20 years.

Friday, November 13, 2009
concert 1: Fathers & Sons
recorded at Capilano University Theatre in North Vancouver, BC
Sometimes, a son respects his father enough that he wants to follow in his father's footsteps. Sometimes, a father wants to seize every opportunity to learn from his son. Both of these sentiments come to play in tonight's Fathers & Sons concert. Last year, figurative fathers Jim Byrnes and Amos Garrett joined figurative sons Doug Cox and Steve Dawson to share musical heritage and ideas. Tonight we gather in their family room to hear their stories and music.
