Coming up in London (Ontario that is)

In addition to being an amazing band our friends in Olenka and the Autumn Lovers run the Open House Arts Collective and put on music (and other arts) shows in and around London, Ontario. One of them even contributes to the site, but she is ill at the moment (no, not with that). But I got an email about upcoming shows that they are happy about a little while ago and thought I should share:

Daniel, Fred & Julie on December 1

Daniel, Fred & Julie - a collaboration between Attack in Black's Daniel Romano, Julie Doiron and Fred "Calm Down It's Monday" Squire (ex - Shotgun and Jaybird) is due out on on December 1 - in plenty of time for your holiday shopping needs.

According to the story:
"Dan took the train to Sackville, NB in the summer of 2009, with a couple of acoustic guitars and a couple of folk songbooks. A tape machine was set up in Fred’s garage. A microphone was placed on the floor in front of a semi-circle of folding chairs. The weather was good that week, the garage door was open, cars would pass, as would kids on bicycles. Arrangements were made up quickly, harmonies worked out, lyrics written on long scraps of paper, verses picked and chosen. Dan and Fred playing guitars, all three singing together. The songs were put down quickly, with no overdubs or edits, and the record was finished in a couple of days."
Look for it in dazzling Mono on CD and LP in a few weeks.

Runner (MP3) will give you an idea of what to expect. The full track list goes:

01. The Gambler and His Bride
02. Runner
03. I Dream of Jeanie
04. No One Knew My Name
05. Hallelujah, I'm a Bum
06. Down By the Weeping Willow
07. Bonnie Black Bess

Julie Doiron Tour Dates (Europe, US & Canada)

The winner of NxEW's 2009 Shadow Polaris voting - Julie Doiron is on tour pretty much from now until February. (She's taking a few weeks off for the holidays - she's a tireless performer but not a masochist). Sadly , for us most of those dates are not in Canada, happily for her many of those dates are in places that are warm this time of year - but the dates take her through Europe, the Southern and Southwestern US, and west/west central Canada. Now that our traffic is up sharply in the US and the rest of the world - I'll try to do a better job of posting international tour dates.

Get out there and show Julie some love rest of the world.

Live Review: Julie Doiron, Herman Dune @ Lee's Palace, Toronto

Julie Doiron is one of the country's musical national treasures. Her unassuming demeanor, loveable cuteness, gorgeous voice, and ability to really rock out when called for are standouts of her live shows. Even more so is the fact that she makes each one feel unique in ways other performers are unable to match. Last Tuesday night's Toronto concert at Lee's Palace was no different. It was, to my mind, also one of the concerts of the year.

The show opened with Doiron's friend, Shotgun Jimmie, but his 8:30pm slot was under-advertised, and I missed it entirely. Next up, one-time Doiron collaborators Herman Dune, a Paris-based two-piece. (They were Julie's backing band for 2004's Goodnight Nobody.) Self-introduced as David Herman Dune (vocals and guitar) and Neman Herman Dune (drums), the band performed 11 songs; practically a headlining set. David's songs and singing style remind me of Jens Lekman. They are personal and a little chatty, kinda folky---or, "anti-folk," as they call themselves---but mostly popy. So, tailor made for me to fall in love with them (and I did when I saw them at Lee's back in March). It was a strong set, helped by Julie joining in singing duties for the last couple songs. I was impressed with the band's ability to really rock out given their instrumental limitations. The extended versions of the songs they performed were great, and really got the crowd revved up for the main event. In fact, the post-performance cheering was unlike anything I've heard before for a mid-show band: long and loud with many shouts of "encore!" It was not to be.

Happy that my earlier comments to show-going friends that "Herman Dune is great, you'll like them" had proven true, I was hoping for great things from Julie. And that's what I got. She was backed that night---and that night only, so she said---by the Baird brothers: Jesse on drums and Jay on bass. Other guests included Constantines' Will Kidman and Shotgum Jimmie on electric guitar. Quite the impressive lineup. A friend standing behind me was giddy with excitement; this was more than she could have hoped for. The only thing missing (for me) was Julie's musical partner Fred Squire, but she performed two of his songs, including the brilliant "Spill Yer Lungs."

Julie, Will, and the Baird Brothers performed 10 songs for us, rocking them up good. We got a string of hits, including new ones off her most recent record, I Can Wonder What You Did with Your Day. My favourite off the new record, "Tailor," made it in there. Then the men left the stage, and Julie sang and strummed 6 more. She took audience requests, performing rather more, I think, than perhaps she'd planned. She asked at one point whether she could play a new one for us, seeming apologetic for wanting to do so. Oh Julie, you're so cute. And then Jesse---who's gotta have the best drum face in the business---and Jay came back on-stage. "Jimmers" was invited up too, for an impromptu figure-it-out-as-we-go-along jam session to perform 4 more songs. On a couple occasions Jesse knocked both drum mics off their stands, he was hitting the symbols so forcefully. The whole thing was really something else. I was counting songs, the good reviewer that I am, and so was aware that we were getting rather more than normal. Julie's tunes run shorter than most, but still. The show ran the gamut from soft and sweet (and nearly heart-breaking) to hard-rocking awesomeness. As I left the venue, I overheard one bouncer comment to another, "An hour 45 [minutes]---fans got their money's worth." Indeed. Wow.

Julie Doiron wins NxEW's Shadow Polaris Poll

Julie Doiron has long been admired by Canadian music fans and musicians alike but has never sought rock-star status. She seems perfectly happy to be a successful touring musician with a loyal and always growing fan base but not particularly interested in limos and four star hotels. So it seems fitting that she has had a huge year in a very quiet way. It may not have come from music critics, or the 'music industry' but ordinary fans, the people she's always seemed most interested in have been heaping the love on her. First it was Julie Doiron Day in Bruno Saskatchewan, then her band Eric's Trip was, along with the Rheostatics, inducted in the first year of Zunior's Independent Music Hall of Fame and now, without even being long listed for the real Polaris Prize, he album I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day has won NxEW's Shadow Polaris Prize.

To recap one more time, back in May we asked readers of (and writers for) NxEW to nominate their favorite album of the year, based on artistic merit alone (not popularity). We started with a list of almost 100 albums and then, via open vote, narrowed it and narrowed it until we got down to a top 10 which included Julie Doiron - I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day, Timber Timbre - self titled, Jill Barber - Chances, Chad Van Gaalen - Soft Airplane, Elliott Brood - Mountain Meadows, Joel Plaskett - Three, Hey Rosetta! - Into Your Lungs, Laura Barrett -Victory Garden, Great Lake Swimmers - Lost Channels, and Jenn Grant - Echoes. After another vote, open to everyone which lasted more than a month, Julie Doiron has emerged as your choice in our Shadow Polaris Poll.

Again, sadly, we don't have twenty thousand dollars to give our, or the money to fly everyone in for a star studded gala - all we have is our love and admiration for an amazing artist who keeps getting better.

If you are unfamiliar you can find more about Julie at JulieDoiron.com, myspace.com/juliedoiron, radio3.cbc.ca/bands/Julie-Doiron, on Facebook, Twitter or Wikipedia.

You can also, if you don't already have it, download the single Consolation Prize here.

When Brakes Get Wet We'll Hope For The Best

(photos via JulieDoiron.com)

One of the most fun things about the interweb music era is finding something new, interesting, but also something that you say to yourself, I'm curious where that came from I want to know more (if you're more smart than me, you'd probably say something eloquent). Anyways, as you may have guessed by my lead in, I'm in that sort of discovery phase with (apparently) Canadian indie music icon, Julie Doiron.

This, to me, is a pretty cool thing, since I don't really get to 'discover' stuff so much anymore. Which is certainly not to say that I know everything, but I feel like its rare for me to find someone who has been this prolific (she has been making records since 1993 on her own, and since 1990 w/ Eric's Trip) but also someone who is so universally adored by everyone who has written about her. Also, I think being on the Jagjaguwar label (Bon Iver, Besnard Lakes, Pink Mountaintops, etc.) speaks volumes about her street cred, as it were.

I guess all this stuff about how great JD is has led me to wonder why I hadn't heard her stuff before. I've got some theories, one involves her establishing herself in the pre-interweb, digital media era; another involves her un-Jessica Simpson/Jenny Lewis/Santigold sort of look/persona that isn't marketable, or that; she just may like making music, touring and playing, and isn't really interested in being rich, famous, or otherwise adored by people like me (and probably you to).

But rather that fleshing out those (half-baked) theories, I thought I would solicit some suggestions on JD's best work from those who are familiar. I e-mailed Bryan from Herohill and he suggested: the new one, I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day [2009]; the Polaris nominated, Woke Myself Up [2007]; or Heart and Crime [2002]. I'm wondering if anyone has any other suggestions....

Busy Hillside Saturday Recap

Saturday at Hillside featured a slew of amazing performers - enough to keep me on my feet 11 of the 12 hours of music. Catching no less than 19 different sets I was busy and here is my attempt to recap ALL of that including Bruce Peninsula, Attack in Black, Julie Doiron, Bahamas, Ohbijou and so much more.

With three minutes to showtime, a gaggle of instrument-toting musicians walked through the crowd to the Island Stage early Saturday morning. The Cliff Hangars workshop was titled "Bruce Peninsula meets The Rural Alberta Advantage" and it was quite literal as they met mere minutes before the show began. This was slightly unfortunate as they weren't able to plan the collaborations all too well and therefore swapped songs for at least the first few tracks (after a lengthy Rock-Paper-Scissors duel to see who would go first). Of these there was a notable RAA track, North Star, which is an apparently still unwritten (or at least incomplete) new tune. The bands finally meshed when they performed Fleetwood Mac's The Chain led by the BP females, and some slide guitar (while the bass solo was done by voice since they were lacking in an actual bass). On another track there was an attempt to record and sample the entire crowd humming a note. However this failed so instead the members of both groups crowded around the tiny keyboard and were able to lay it down. This was subsequently used on a track that only employed keys, percussion and vocals. In finale they attempted to teach us a song written by a preacher that asks "What are they doing in heaven today?" The lessons didn't stick all too well, but boy did we nail the count-it-in "bum-bum-bum"! As a nice touch, the closing chorus was sung completely a capella.

Emma-Lee

Emma-Lee sang That Sinking Feeling on the Main Stage in a colourful summer dress playing an acoustic guitar. Lovely as it was I was off to wake up with Green Go!

After Green Go, since Julie Doiron was late to the Lake Stage I snuck over for literally a glimpse of Kristin Sweetland. The tall lady was telling stories and I just couldn't wait around for the song to begin so I jetted back to Julie Doiron who still hadn't begun. Eventually she took to the stage and I caught a fast, extra-rocking version of a song I enjoy, No More. However with the full 4-piece band playing, Julie didn't seem to be focusing on the vocals and they became unemphasized and lost in the mix, to my disappointment. I decided to cut it off then and jet to the Island Stage.

Bruce Peninsula

Just an hour after finishing up their collaboration, Bruce Peninsula were back at it. The nine-piece nearing-gospel group filled the stage with four lovely females, leaving five equally as lovely males. Introducing the song as a "lung-collapser" due to the exhausting vocal harmonies they belted out Shutters and by the end I could understand the descriptor. The male lead vocalist has a very distinct and somewhat gruff voice, but when offset by the angelic singing of his female companions it melds into glory. For the final number Casey of Ohbijou joined them on-stage for a rousing rendition of Crabapples, perhaps the best track off A Mountain is a Mouth. It was mindblowing, with drumming on everything from the metal tent poles to the stage itself, along with tambos galore as the aforementioned male lead walked throughout the crowd. Do we want this set to end? "Oh Hell No"!

Bahamas

During Bruce Peninsula's set it had begun to rain heavily (though enthralled by the set I hadn't noticed) and it sealed my decision to stay at the Island Tent and give Bahamas another shot. Afie took to the stage with an electric guitar (no, not a Pink Strat) alongside a drummer. He ran through a number of songs from that album before excusing the drummer and playing a couple more solo. Unfortunately I'd decided that despite my efforts to get into it, Bahamas just weren't the thing for me, which meant that I left the tent before Tony Dekker (Great Lake Swimmers) and Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy) joined Afie for a cover of Purple Rain. Dang.

I did catch some of Treasa Levasseur and her upbeat, jazzy music on the Lake Stage, filled out with a guitar, couple of saxophones and drums.

The Tallboys comprised of Kevin Breit, Matt Brubeck and Jesse Stewartplayed some great freewheeling music together as the accomplished musicians collaborated on the Lake Stage. Obvious professionals their timing was impeccable and the songs themselves great. All of this emphasized considering Jesse Stewart removed a boot cast from his broken foot before beginning the set.

While passing by David Martel at the Main Stage I was forced to stick around as he was playing The Good Lord which then morphed into most of John Wayne Gacy, Jr from Sufjan Stevens' fantastic Illinois before returning to a strong ending of the original track. This delayed my arrival to Ohbijou who had packed the Island Stage. With streamers streaming from their mic stands Casey sang, with her sis Jennifer on violin and the band also playing xylophone and cello on tracks such as Steep. It was the final song that came across best though. Just as Bruce Peninsula had included Casey on their last song earlier in the day, most (if not all) of Bruce Peninsula clamoured onstage for a singalong that brought out the sunshine once again!

After a refreshing swim I waited for Mishka's reggae to finish before the haunting Timber Timbre set.

On the way to eat lunch provided for volunteers I heard some familiar strings and followed my ears to the Sun Stage. Am I glad I did, as Owen Pallett was partway through a favourite Final Fantasy song, This Is the Dream of Win and Regine. (He should have saved that song with the verse "I tried, and tried to keep the clouds away!" for his stormy main stage set!) I would have liked to stay for more as Owen noted later that sharing the stage with Buffy Sainte-Marie was a highlight of his life, but I was called away by dogged hunger.

Attack in Black
disappointed me once again live. Perhaps I should just accept that I'm only a fairweather fan - enjoying a handful of their singles but never loving their full catalogue and usually finding myself bored by the live shows that insist on playing the deeper album cuts. I did catch one of their more straight-ahead rock songs, You're Such an Only Child, which I did enjoy though.

Eccodek

My only other option was Eccodek on the Main Stage, who as I noted before play music that isn't within my regular scope, but watching them I could feel the energy they were pumping out nonetheless.

Though I would have liked to have seen Silver Starling debut some of their material, or to have accompanied my girlfriend to her fave Dala, or catch up with my hometown-heroesTokyo Police Club (Newmarket is close enough to Bradford right?) I played it safe by staying put in the Island Tent and not braving the possibility of a giant line to get back in. Overall I think it was a wise decision based on what I heard (or didn't hear in the case of Silver Starling) from others who had attempted it. Based on experience I'm sure the Sunparlour Players would have been great as well. However I was more than happy with the sets from Hey Rosetta, Library Voices, Woodhands and The Arkells!

For those of you who have already seen that, did you catch - Julie's Tiny Desk Concert at NPR? How about Her SXSW Session at Daytrotter? How about her Sept 16, 2007 show at the Jane Bond in Waterloo Ont? (Here's Part 2).

If you already have all of this, sorry for bothering you but someone asked if I did - so I thought I'd ask you all too.

CBC Radio on Canada Day: Justin Rutledge, Julie Doiron & Maybe Smith

This year, for the second time, I spent Canada day in Ottawa. I went up to Parliament Hill around noon and had a look at the massive crowds then wandered over to nearby Magor's Hill park to see what was going on there. CBC Radio was about to start their songwriters circle with Justin Rutledge, Maybe Smith, Julie Doiron and the Sojourners. Unlike Parliament Hill I was able to walk right up to the stage - so I decided to hang out. Sadly I couldn't find a good camera angle for the Sojourners - every time they stood up they were blocked by a railing on the stage and I couldn't actually see them. There were a few songs by the others that I missed for various reasons (mostly technical.) This should give you some idea though:

PHOTOS: Flemish Eye Ball w/ Chad Vangaalen, Julie Doiron, WOMEN, Pale Air Singers, etc.

As reported last week, Calgary’s premier indie label, Flemish Eye, put on a highly anticipated (and highly sold out) shindig at the Royal Canadian Legion #1 in the downtown core. It was a veritable who’s who of local musicians with a few very special guests from coast to coast added to the mix.

Two synched stages (upstairs and downstairs) offered back to back bands all night long. First off, I caught The Pale Air Singers. The supergroup Singers feature both members of Victoria's Run Chico Run and Calgary's The Cape May. To top it off, their self-titled debut album was released TODAY!

Next up was Ghostkeeper with special guests Jay Crocker and Scott Munro (Günther, etc.). The crowd was packed in very tightly, but I managed to get close enough to catch a few great shots.

Local road warriors WOMEN tore it up afterwards. Their sound crystallized by over 200 shows in the past year. Matt Flagel held it all down on bass, not the least bit tired from his earlier performance with the Pale Air Singers.

Trivia Moment: Mr. Matt Flagel, not to be confused with his brother Pat (WOMEN vocalist), is also in The Cape May AND plays with Chad Vangaalen from time to time.

(Yes, that is a small picture of Oprah on his pick guard)

Unfortunately, the crowd upstairs wasn’t as easily navigable this time around, so my shots of Azeda Booth were taken from a precarious perch atop a railing

The evening culminated with a fantastic double shot of Julie Doiron and Chad Vangaalen. First, we heard Julie doing a few solo songs. I was glad to hear “Spill Yer Lungs” among others from her great new album. Chad backed her up on drums.

Then, the musicians changed roles. Chad picked up his guitar and threw down lots of material from Soft Airplane. Here he is playing banjo while maintaining a steady Vrksasana (tree pose) throughout the song “Willow Tree”:

Two big thumbs up to Ian Russell (AKA Mr. Flemish Eye, AKA The Hardest Working Man in Calgary Music) and everyone at/on Flemish Eye for regaling us with such a rare event!

Huge Live Music Archive (thanks Tyler)

Tyler Wade of Two Way Monologues and Zygiella fame pointed me to an amazing archive of live recordings at soundmann.com. The recordings go back to a Chris Brown and Kate Fenner show in October of 2004. Sadly there is no RSS feed for the site so you'll just have to check it regularly for new stuff but it's all in MP3 format and it's all free.

There are way too many shows to list but they include

The Burning Hell. 2008 Jul 26. Hillside Festival, Guelph ON.

Rebekah Higgs. 2008 Jul 25. Hillside Festival, Guelph ON.

D'Urbervilles. 2008 Aug 17. Dog Day Afternoon, Fergus ON.

Caribou. 2008 Mar 19. Starlight, Waterloo ON.

Forest City Lovers. 2008 Mar 15. 130 King, Waterloo ON

Julie Doiron. 2007 Sep 16. Jane Bond, Waterloo ON

Rock Plaza Central. 2007 Jul 28. Hillside Festival, Guelph ON

and that, as I said barely begins to scratch the surface a little. Dig In!
