NxEW Spotlight: The Wooden Sky

Originally breaking into the scene as Friday Morning’s Regret, The Wooden Sky changed their name in 2007 and so began their journey. The band is composed of members Gavin Gardner, Andrew Wyatt, Simon Walker, Andrew Kekewich, Anissa Hart, Mika Posen and Edwin Huizinga and have regular guests preform with them from Ohbijou, Rural Alberta Advantage and Forest City Lovers (to name a few). Though they’re defined as an alt. rock /country band, their sound also incorporates many elements of folk. They are signed to the Black Box record label and have two albums to date. Their latest album If I Don’t Come Home You’ll Know I’m Gone, released this past August, has received a lot of well deserved attention and after just wrapping up a successful tour opening for Elliot Brood they’re continuing throughout Ontario and Quebec headlining alongside last weeks Spotlight Artist Evening Hymns. Their sold out show this past Friday here in Toronto at Lee’s Palace speaks wonders for their growing popularity.

When NxEW, decided to start the Spotlight Artist of the week, The Wooden Sky immediately came to mind. The band are in my opinion, a prime example of the greatness of the Canadian Music industry. They have been a part of the Friends of Bellwood’s 2007 and 2009 compilation and truly exemplify the community that goes along with music and being a successful musician in Toronto. They've found a good balance of popularity, without being mainstream, the ultimate Indie band if you will.

If you’re a regular reader of NxEW this isn’t your first time hearing about The Wooden Sky because we’ve been writing about them and covering their shows for quite some time now. They were featured as our pick of the week #30 back in August and are a fellow favourite to many of our contributors.

If you’re not a regular reader and don’t know the band I strongly suggest you check them out but if you don’t want to take my word for it, here are some reviews of their newest album, that plead my case for me:

The Grassy Knoll Under The Wooden Sky...

On a cool Wednesday night at John Rogers Park in Vancouver, The Wooden Sky played to a crowd perched on the hillside.

I saw these guys in Toronto a few years ago, but sitting watching the sun go down with 100 other people, kids on the swings, dogs and bikes everywhere...all while the band played, was a pretty amazing treat.

And on top of that they were joined for a few songs by the glorious Debra Jean Creelman!

Here are a few of my shots:
