40 Canadian Artists recording 'Waving Flag' for Haiti

According to the Globe and Mail more than 40 Canadian artists came together in Vancouver (where many are performing at the Olympics, to record a new version of the K'Naan song "Waving Flag" to benefit Haiti:
"Although details are still sketchy, she confirmed that about 40 Canadian vocalists and performers had gathered to record a new version of the song Wavin' Flag .

Bryan Adams, Nelly Furtado, Feist, Nickleback, Emily Haines, Ron Sexsmith and Colin James are just a few of the Canadian performing artists currently in Vancouver for the Olympic Games who may have lent their voices to the super-group recording which sounds similar to We Are the World , the 1985 charity single for African famine relief. Diana Krall is also in town, as is Broken Social Scene."

Full Story at the Globe and Mail.

New Metric T-Shirt to Raise Funds for Haiti

A little while back Metric came out with a 'Help Haiti' t-shirt with Help, I'm Alive printed on the front. The controversy kicked in almost immediately. It was unavoidable really. People accused Metric of using Haiti for self promotion, they said Help, I'm Alive was inappropriate as a message etc.,

The reality is that tall poppy syndrome is in full effect when it comes to Metric. It doesn't matter much what they do someone is going to criticize them for it. At any rate Metric has re-done the t-shirt design. In an email today the band said:
"Hello all,

Over the past few days, we have come to realize that some people found the wording of our Help Haiti t-shirt design to be questionable. Despite our good intentions, we can see how the messaging could be interpreted in a way different than we intended, and we apologize to anyone who took offense.

Moving forward, we will continue with the campaign, as Haiti will still need our assistance and donations long after the telethons and fundraisers are out of the news. We have however come up with a new, simple ribbon-design t-shirt in place of the original version which will be available here.

Anyone who has already bought a t-shirt will have the choice of keeping their original purchase, or selecting this new version instead. We will contact purchasers individually in the coming days in order to determine your preference.

We appreciate the dialogue and urge you to contribute to this campaign or others that are making an effort to help a country in need.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has participated in the Help Haiti t-shirt campaign so far. We have already raised thousands of dollars that will go toward aiding those dealing first-hand with this catastrophic event.

If you prefer to donate directly to a relief organization, then please click on any of the following links: Red Cross / Oxfam / Unicef / Save The Children / World Vision / Canada For Haiti / Partners In Health

Thanks for you ears,

xox metric"
Oddly no one thought it was inappropriate for them to do Help, I'm Alive at the Canada for Haiti concert that raised 13.5 million for earthquake victims (or at least if they did they didn't say so). Oh well, whatever... You can get the t-shirt at http://www.kt8merch.com/store/pages/metric

Webathon for Haiti

(image via Amanda Ash at the Indie Files)

Tomorrow CBC Radio 3 is calling for a "Webathon for Haiti". I don't plan to beat it to death, we're a music site but everyone should get involved to an extent. Tweet, post and talk to people and get the donation dollars up.

Just to put things in perspective, does everyone remember 9/11? The day the world changed and gave us the 'new normal' and then the 'War on Terror'? Well what happened in Haiti last week cost more lives than the War on Terror has to date (on all sides, civilians and military) and all of that in a few short minutes. If the figures coming out of Haiti are accurate the casualty figures are roughly equivalent to 100 September 11ths, and it destroyed 90% of the structures (schools, hospitals, police stations, prisons, homes etc), and it happened in one of the poorest countries in the world - a place where the vast majority of people literally go to work in the morning so they can have dinner that evening. I understand that 9/11 was preventable, perhaps even predictable and the earthquake was not - the point is that it's impossible to overstate how dire the situation is. Help if you can.

Via the Radio 3 blog:
"The Haitian earthquake is the worst natural disaster to hit the Western Hemesphere in recorded history. As many as 200,000 people are feared dead, with 250,000 injured, and 1.5 million homeless.

This Friday, January 22nd at 8pm ET, close to 100 broadcasters across North America will put aside their corporate differences to simulcast Hope For Haiti Now. Canadian broadcasters, will also carry the program, and have joined forces to produce Canada for Haiti, an hour-long pre-show starting @ 7pm ET.

In support of relief efforts, CBC Radio 3 is planning a one-day open-source webathon in support of Haitian quake victims. Throughout the day, we will be urging the Radio 3 community to come together and donate as much as they can to NGOs working in Haiti. But unlike a traditional telethon or radiothon, a webathon is someting everyone can participate in. Don’t think of this as a Radio 3 thing, so much as an open source web community thing.

:: If you have a blog, push your readers to get involved.Who cares if you usually write about music, or hi-larious cat videos… take the time today to shift gears and help fight the good fight.

:: If you Tweet or are on Facebook, don’t be shy, tell your followers who you’ve donated to. Every little bit helps. And be sure to use the hashtag #haitiwebathon.

:: CBC has compiled a list of NGO’s working in Haiti. We encourage the online community to push people here, or if you have your own NGO you’d like to promote, by all means, please do.

We know this is short notice, but the web was built for speed, flexibility and creativity. Even a single blog post can help keep this disaster fresh in the minds of people who’ve yet to donate, so don’t be afraid to go all PBS fundraising drive on theirs asses."

Help For Haiti (A List of Fundraisers)

I've gotten alot of info about Haiti and various fundraisers to help with the relief effort since the earthquake struck there eight days ago. My initial inclination was to back off of most of it. There are news organizations everywhere giving the latest information out of Haiti and offering you resources to help with donating money. The CBC has a very good page and a list of reputable charities at cbc.ca/haitirelief.

Being that this is a Canadian music site and international disaster and relief is way outside of our subject area I didn't want to seem like I was using the disaster for self promotion (the way CNN always does). That said I kept getting more and more invites for a wide variety of fundraisers for Haiti. I've also figured out from watching various reports out of the country that no matter how bad you think it is, it's worse and no matter how much money has been raised it's not enough.

There are still people being pulled alive from destroyed buildings. There are still places that haven't received any help. People who haven't gotten any food aid, make-shift hospitals operating without any real supplies and the death toll is still growing - they aren't just finding more bodies from the quake, people are still dying from their injuries, some simply because there isn't enough medical aid yet.

So, I'm going to do my best to list the fundraisers that I know of, and I will try to update the list and occasionally republish lists for those who are interested. Remember though, you don't need to go to a fundraiser to give - if you're able just go to cbc.ca/haitirelief.

Now, rather than publish the graphic and tragic images that have been pouring out of the country recently I thought I would just pass along this video that I found via Will Mcuirk earlier today. Although Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and it has had far more than it's share of natural disaster and political disaster it has seen far better days. This is a fan video set to the music of the Arcade Fire's song "Haiti". It was made long before the earthquake and contains not a drop of blood or fallen building. I think that it's important not to just look at what is but to consider what was and what may be:

Now the List:

Nationwide: Friday January 22
Close to 100 broadcasters across North America are joining together for "Hope for Haiti Now" - in Canada this broadcast will start at 7 pm. Some details can be found at cbc.ca and more guests are being added by the hour.

On that same day and in the same spirit CBC Radio 3 is hosting an all day "Webathon" for Haiti - get involved via the Radio 3 site, Facebook, Twitter, your own blog, website, myspace ...or whatever you do. Details are at cbcradio3.cbc.ca.

Gift Idea: New Metric Shirt Raises Funds for Musicounts

If you are unfamiliar with the Yellow Bird Project it works like this. Indie bands design t-shirts, these are custom shirts not available at merch tables or anywhere else. Yellow Bird Project sells them and gives the profits to a charity of the artists choice. Just in time for the holidays they've unveiled a brand new shirt by/for Metric with the proceeds going to Musicounts which works to keep music programs alive and healthy in Canadian public schools:
"MusiCounts is a Canadian charity promoting musical education across Canada. Their mission is to ensure that schools across Canada, regardless of their socioeconomic background, are able to provide a comprehensive musical education program to students. Initiatives of MusiCounts include grants and scholarships to help support music education. Since 1997, more than $3 and a half million has been donated and put towards this great cause. All Metric t-shirt purchases go towards helping out MusiCounts."
You can get yours here.
