ARCTIC Front in Western Canada!

ARCTIC

March 13: The Railway Club, Vancouver, BC
April 10: Ottoman Lounge, Medicine Hat, AB
April 12: The Biltmore Cabaret, Vancouver, BC
April 23: O'Hanlon's, Regina, SK
April 24: Marquee Room, Calgary, AB

ARCTIC is creeping through the mountains to the prairies this spring, but don't worry about being left in the cold. These progressive rockers will warm your hearts with their aptly coined 'space rock', and they are playing near you! Contact ModMay Promotions for details or press opportunities with Vancouver's darling rockers, ARCTIC.

ARCTIC was formed out of Marcus Martin's desire to never, ever be in another band again. After a childhood spent on the land in the isolated Northwest Territories of Canada, the guitarist travelled to the metropolis of Toronto and became involved in projects ranging from jazz to metal to rap. Growing weary of band politics, he went solo, and headed west to Vancouver to write his own music. Marcus began performing using a looping device that would allow him to modify, loop and layer his acoustic performance into a haunting moodiness evocative of a cold Northern landscape. With a rich, unique sound that was already gaining an audience, he had no need for backing musicians.

But strong music attracts interest, and others came to express a desire to join the project. Following two solo cross-Canada tours as ARCTIC, Martin was invited to open for a CD release party, and on a whim, put a trio together for the show. The full band version of ARCTIC was instantly picked up by a local promoter, and began to perform regularly around Vancouver. Despite his initial wariness, Martin found that adding band members created new dimensions and possibilities to his music, and by working with colleagues who were equally inspired by his music and vision, the band's spirit became collaborative and wholly positive.

The new members brought their influences from the furthest edges of the country. Kirsten Starcher, an east-coaster from St. John's, Newfoundland, became the band's bassist, keyboardist, and backing singer. On drums, Rob Sheldrick from St. Catharines, Ontario represents Canada's southern border. Combined with Martin's Northern roots and based in the west coast city of Vancouver BC, ARCTIC touches every point on the Canadian compass.

Always seeking contrast, ARCTIC is still sometimes a solo project, sometimes a full band, never exactly the same from one show to the next. In either form it combines diverse influences in unexpected ways: progressive rock, jazz, and industrial merge with ambient textures and acoustic singer/songwriter melodies to create something fresh, unconventional and intriguing.

Burst Into Flower this spring with Fish & Bird!

Fish & Bird are hitting the road once again! These travelers of the highways are reaching far and wide across the country this spring, rousing audiences everywhere they go in their veggie-oil fueled Delica Van. Songwriter and banjo player Taylor Ashton (Winnipeg) and fiddler Adam Iredale-Gray (Victoria) are joined by guitarist Ryan Boeur (Vancouver) and upright bassist Zoe Guigeno (Toronto), rounding out an already irresistable sound with top notch players from across Canada. Don't miss Fish & Bird in your neck of the woods this spring!

Fish & Bird's relationship with folk music is a little complicated. Their love for old-time and folk traditions comes from deep in their hearts, but that profound respect doesn't stop them from showing the genre a little abuse. At the core of Fish & Bird is a partnership between virtuosic multi-instrumentalist Adam Iredale-Gray and singer/songwriter Taylor Ashton, and their musical education stems from playing such diverse styles as Irish music, jazz, garage rock, musical theatre, and old-time. Fish & Bird layer these styles into their traditional roots and stay fresh and unique through their desire to create new and exciting music utilizing all these various influences.

Their self recorded, self-produced, and self-titled debut EP, was released in 2007, to attentive audiences across Canada. Their latest recording, also self produced, recorded and packaged, the full-length "Left Brain Blues", is a more mature and developed exploration of what happens when the pair's musical influences collide. In just under an hour, it takes the folk genre for a wild ride through eastern influences, pop rock and traditional roots, while remaining cohesive. It showcases Taylor Ashton's agile voice, which ranges from a deep bass to a very sturdy falsetto, and the pair's creative arrangements, as well as a full cast of well known guest musicians.

A live Fish & Bird show comes in many shapes and sizes; from a duo to a five piece full band, and all sorts of configurations between, even switching up instruments among themselves. They have played hundreds of shows, toured the length of the country four times and played loads of close to home shows. They've garnered attention from the Canadian Folk Music Awards, and heard themselves on CBC and college/community radio stations across Canada. From the fundraiser for the upcoming 2011 Folk Festival in Victoria, to house concerts, sold out nightclubs and back rooms of cafes, what keeps them getting back on stage night after night is a passion to perform their unique brand of art folk for as many people as they can get to listen. Are you listening?

Billy Manzik's musical journey began where Highway 61, the "Blues Highway" ends, in Thunder Bay Ontario. The soundtrack for his upbringing was provided by his guitar slinging, country singing mother, and influenced by roots rock, old rhythm and blues, and even (gasp) the metal bands of the 80's, not to mention Billy's penchant for wandering the continent. The result is a driving blues rock sound, complete with catchy riffs, lyrical hooks and a 'feel-good' toe tapping kind of style.

Billy's new release AllTogetherNow packages this sound into one beautiful and diverse album, sure to catch the ear of any who hear it. From the anthemic, uptempo lead out track 'On A Road' and the sweet harmonies of 'Hannah', to the wailin' bluesy rock of '61 Highway' and the summertime pop sounds of 'Has Been', 'AllTogetherNow' combines musical ingredients so well it puts the icing on the rock n' roll cake. Recorded at Orange Lounge Studios and Knob and Tube Studios in Toronto and produced by Chris Wardman (The Tragically Hip, Randy Bachman) with help from David Gavan Baxter (Justin Rutledge), 'AllTogetherNow' is music for modern times. Chock full of energy, hope, and a little melancholy, its mostly just plain fun. In addition to Billy on vocals and guitar, the album showcases the talents of many well-known Canadian musicians, Geoff Hilhorst (Deep Dark Woods) on keys, Erik Allen (Jenny Whiteley) on drums, Mike Filipowitsch on guitar and Jonny Kerr on bass, plus appearances from many others. Everyone, all together now!

Watch for a glowing review of "AllTogetherNow" in the spring issue of Penguin Eggs, Canada's Folk, Roots & World Music Magazine, which calls the album "a powerful roots-rock assault that hits every pop nerve you've ever pumped with proteins." (Eric Thom)

Billy Manzik's music career debuted in Alberta in 2007 with his self-titled release, recorded at Calgary's Rocky Mountain Studios with producer Rob Smith, with help from Daniel J. Coe (Aerosmith, The Trews) and contributed to by Canadian icons Tim Williams, Charlie Hase and Bill Zulak. "Billy Manzik" received critical acclaim, charting on several !earshot charts and being featured on CBC's Key of A. In 2008 Billy showcased at the annual Alberta Sessions (Alberta Music Series), broadcast on CBC's Radio 2, and kicked off the 2008 Juno Awards with a spirited performance at the annual Juno Welcome Reception. In recent years Billy has played with or opened for such luminaries as Blue Rodeo, Elliott Brood, The Trews, and Colin James. Billy currently resides back in Thunder Bay, Ontario while he decides where to go next!

"..do yourself a favor and purchase a copy of this brilliant new record from Billy Manzik. I don't believe there will be a sorry bone in your body." ~ 'Rebel' Rod Ames, NoDepression.com

"Once again a Canadian beats Americans at their own game...Billy Manzik writes cool, bluesy, Americana-based pop/rock that is fueled by genuine sincerity...Manzik is one of those up-and-coming artists who could easily become hugely popular if all the pieces just happen to fit together." ~ babysue.com

OUT IN THE STORM: Ruth Purves Smith and the 581

Ruth Purves-Smith

CD RELEASE PARTY SHOWS

April 17: The Den, University of Calgary, Calgary AB
April 18: Ironwood Stage & Grill, Calgary AB
May 7: The Axis Cafe, Edmonton, AB

The Stunning Debut from Ruth Purves Smith... Ruth Purves Smith and the 581 are on the radar! Don't miss this wonderfully endearing Canadian country music group as they release their amazing debut album. Playing release shows in Calgary and Edmonton, Ruth and the band promise a rollicking country rock party for anyone and everyone, so come join in the fun! Contact ModMay Promotions for further details or press opportunities with the talented and dearly loved Ruth Purves Smith and the 581.

Ruth Purves Smith grew up rambling the prairie highways between her cultured mother's urban home and her father and stepmother's antique woolen mill rural home, and the paradox is evident in her sound and style. While the stories may appear to be simple, traditional country, they are supported by a sound that pulls influence from the city; complicated, restless and sometimes loud.

Grouping together with the 581, Ruth recorded her debut solo album 'Out In The Storm' after years with various bands in and around Alberta. It's one of those long time coming albums and to all who hear it, is well timed yet way overdue! Built on a foundation of driving, electric country rock, laced with banjo, harmonica and acoustic guitar, Ruth constructs spine tingling imagery and emotion with her lyrics, and the entire package takes you through the gamut of emotions. From the heart-wrenching acoustic-turned-rock "Godzilla", also released as a professionally produced High Definition Video, to the summertime feel of "Ride Around", and the steady beats of "Out In The Storm Part I", the songs engage listeners from start to finish. Recorded at Glow Music Arts in Calgary, AB and produced by Craig Newnes, Out In The Storm is a dynamic and enthralling album and Ruth Purves Smith and the 581 are proud to show the world. Ruth's musical career is vast and diverse.

Starting off from answering an ad for a "girl country singer" for Frank James, a slighty nuts one man band, Ruth moved to band incarnations Rodeo-A-Go-Go and Roadside Turnout, highlighted by a performance at the Calgary Folk Music Festival, before taking time to raise her young child. By 1996 after the birth of her second child, Ruth was ready to strike out on her own musically, and began performing solo at various clubs, events, and festivals among such well knowns as Fred Eaglesmith, Jann Arden, The Fates, and Willie P. Bennett. Over the years she has continued to play her own music, loving the writing process and not always playing other people's music anymore, though she still loves to join in on a jam and belt out a few covers or traditional numbers. Loving the rural Alberta life, Ruth is a true symbol of Canadiana country music!

The End of the Trail of Missing Thoughts...

The Gruff

April 7, 2010: Roundhouse Theatre, McBride, AB

April 10, 2010: Lydia's Pub, Saskatoon, SK
April 11, 2010: Brooks Hall, Hudson Bay, SK

April 30, 2010: Cafe Deux Soleils, Vancouver, BC
May 1, 2010: Ambrosia Event Center, Victoria, BC

The Gruff's Last Tour...

In the several years acclaimed group The Gruff have been making music, they've developed themselves as well regarded indie folk/country darlings, released three popular albums, won awards, toured extensively across the country, and remained only 25% boy through the whole thing. But now 'Gruffians' Jenny Ritter, Phaedra Kemp and Terri Upton, joined this time around by slide/dobro player Christopher Herbst, are hitting the road for a goodbye tour before going their own musical ways in 2010. Heading through BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan, band members are excited and saddened to play some of their favorite venues one last time under the Gruff moniker, but each are looking forward to new life ventures as well as enjoying their legacy. Contact ModMay Promotions to arrange for press opportunities with The Gruff to say goodbye to one of Canada's most regarded folk/country bands!

The Gruff filter folk traditions through the sieve of modern experience to create a truly unique sound, aptly described as a 'coastal country' style. From old-time folk and country to bluegrass to classic rock 'n roll, these young songwriters sing with astounding energy and passion. They are known for their beautiful harmonies, touching and whimsical lyrics, and entertaining stage presence which displays their obvious delight in performance. Every song has a story behind it, be it love, heartache, travel, or hard work, and the show is interspersed with traditional tunes picked up over their various journeys. The Gruff's genuine chemistry is apparent and engaging.

Phaedra Kemp accompanies her edgy vocals on the standing snare drum and bass drum and plays a melancholy harmonica as well. Jenny Ritter hammers her guitar like John Henry himself, and sings with all her heart. On the double bass is Terri Upton; the big bull fiddle may rival her in size, but she is in charge of the behemoth, keeping the reliable beat and groove steady. The women's three-part harmonies are rich and sweet, but The Gruff's instrumental prowess is quite apparent as well. The three women are often joined on stage by well known fiddler and banjo player Adam Iredale-Gray, who shreds solos and adds lovely textures to an already complex sound. The Gruff have also allotted their 25% boy ratio to fantastic Canadian players Adrian Dolan (fiddle), Adam Dobres (Electric Guitar), Tim Tweedale (Weissenborn) and Christopher Herbst (Dobro/lap slide), many of which also played on their recent critically acclaimed album, A Trail of Missing Thoughts. The Gruff have also amazed audiences at the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival, Ottawa Folk Festival, Hillside Festival in Guelph, Victoria's (now defunct) Rootsfest and Ness Creek Music Festival in Big River, SK.

"You don't have to have the blues in order to sing them, nor do you have to hail from Texas in order to play country music. That much is evident on A Trail of Missing Thoughts...It's an impressive and thoughtful stroll through the bluegrass of Kentucky, the trad-country of Texas and the 1970s folk of California." ~ Mike Devlin, Times Colonist, Victoria

Jeff Andrew is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and fiddler-for-hire living in Vancouver, BC. A ferocious performer with a pawnshop's worth of instruments and a chameleon-like range of styles, he frequently works straight from the floor, stomping his boots and belting like a born-again carnival barker. Jeff learned his craft during years spent hitchhiking, tree planting and busking all over Canada and the United States (including a cross-Canada hitchhiking tour in 2008 with the folk/spoken word group Ghosts of the Highway). He recently returned to Vancouver from a trek to Boston with fellow folk-punk acts O'Mally and Gumshoe Banshee.

In 2009 he released his debut solo album Vagabonds and Wastrels (Shade Tree Records) to radio support and critical acclaim across Canada and western Europe. He has performed numerous times at the ArtsWells festival, the Robson Valley Music Festival and the Brandon Folk Music & Arts festival. He has shared stages with great artists like Geoff Berner, Carolyn Mark, CR Avery, Rae Spoon and Jason Webley. Andrew also plays fiddle with Vancouver's notorious country-punk outfit the Joey Only Outlaw Band. Watch for him in 2010 as he releases his second album Hobo Postcards, assembles a touring band called Crows At Midnight and solves the Mystery of the Haunted Calliope...

Concert Review: Great Lake Swimmers @ Trinity-St.Paul's Centre, Toronto, ON

A -12 degree evening and a long lineup along Bloor Street. Great Lake Swimmers with opener Sharon Van Etten had sold out Trinity-St. Paul’s Church, the coveted Toronto concert venue. I was fortunate enough (though not while waiting in the cold) to be in that line. Here’s what followed:

Sharon Van Etten

There’s a haunting slowness and dejected woe to Sharon Van Etten’s sparse compositions. With her eyes pointed straight forward, her lip curled seemingly in time with the highest points of pain and sadness, remembered through her songs. The wrenching delivery, her hollow-bodied Gibson and vinyl voice cut, then reverberated, filling spaces both corporeal and ephemeral with simple notes and complex images of painted pictures, dried tears and the places where our hearts reside. Van Etten was genuinely grateful for the repeat experience of opening for Great Lake Swimmers, having done so in 2009, and cracked a small smile from the corner of her mouth every time the packed house at Trinity-St. Paul’s in Toronto applauded; our appreciation echoed and magnified by the church. “There’s nothing like the sound of applause in a church,” the Brooklyn songstress said. Though she paused at times to remember new songs, even calling a do-over on one, the crowd loved her. As she finished her set and the appreciation flowed, Van Etten seemed surprised. She shrugged her shoulders, and gave a small awkward smile. “It’s nice not to hear silence after you finish a song” she had said. Great Lake Swimmer’s were up next.

Great Lake Swimmers

In thinking about the rising and falling action of their sets, it occurred to me that Great Lake Swimmers performed in 5 parts that strangely mirrored the 5 act dramatic arc. So...

Part One: "Exposition"
As we sat in our pews, with their carefully carved ends, red velvet cushions, Tony Dekker and company took the stage. With full recording gear in place to capture the night for what will no doubt be a phenomenal live album, they began with “Everything Is Moving So Fast.” The Lost Channels track penetrated deeply in the 121 year old church, beckoning the crowd to follow the band; asking us to “fall in slow motion” with them… revealing the intention of the night.
Great Lake Swimmers have had a somewhat shifting group of musicians on tour over the years, and after a few songs, Dekker took time to introduce the lineup. It included Darcy Yates (The Beauties, Paul and Colleen) on bass, Miranda Mullholland (also a solo artist) on vocals and fiddle, Julie Fader (who’s debut solo album Outside in was released in 2009) on vocals and keys, Erik Arneson on guitar and banjo and Greg Milson on drums. Mid-set though, they dispersed, leaving Dekker and his guitars centre stage and solo.

Part Two: "Rising Action"
Now alone, Dekker’s voice was able to climb to the top of the arrangements. One imagines pebbled shorelines of the Great Lakes or the St. Lawrence, Dekker solitary and contemplative. The spiritual sense, perhaps imbued by the buildings vaulted ceilings, pillars and chandelier, was elevated.

Part Three: "Climax"
We were coming to the end of the night. The whole band had at this point returned and played through what might have been considered a ‘best-of’ set drawn from the full catalogue of 2003’s Great Lake Swimmers, 2005’s Bodies and Minds, 2007’s Ongiara and last year’s Polaris Prize nominated Lost Channels. Known for choosing recording locations for their unique characteristics and atmosphere, it’s clear why the Trinity-St. Paul’s show was being caught. There was an increasing energy to the crowd and to the band as they exchanged knowing looks and smiles to each other. In what has to be the most ironic turn of events, something occurred that has only happened once in all my years of concert going. As Great Lake Swimmers came to the end of “I Am Part of a Large Family,” their set closer, they actually blew a speaker. With only a few notes remaining, a brief clip ended the waves from the left side of the stage just prior to the band bidding the audience goodnight. The crowd stood, reveling in the music and awestruck and remained on their feet and applauding until the inevitable encore.

Part Four: "Falling Action"
Encores are always bittersweet. They satisfy our need for more, but at any minute may end, they hold us rapt and hopeful. The highlight of the encore set was undoubtedly the “fun to play” “See You On The Moon” from the Paperbag Record’s children’s album of the same name, which also includes contributions from Sufjan Stevens, Broken Social Scene, Apostle of Hustle and FemBots. Dekker and Fader almost laughed their way through the ‘what will I be when I grow up’ tune.

Part Five: "Denouement"
Dekker finished the night on his own. He unplugged his guitar, set aside the microphone and played to the space. It felt like our own special “off the record” moment. As if he was giving a gift to those who had been there first hand for a night which others might experience second hand. The sold out crowd stood again as with appreciation in his movement and expression, Dekker left the stage to a church rebounding and ringing with applause and gratitude for the slow-falling experience.

Concert Review: Hamlton's Heart for Haiti Benefit ft. Feist, The Arkells at Hamilton Place Theatre

In the weeks that have followed the deaths of an estimated 200,000 Haitians, there has been an outpouring of generosity and care from points distant. The Hamilton’s Heart for Haiti Benefit concert, held Sunday in The Great Hall at Hamilton Place, organized by Glen Marshall of Vibewrangler recording studios and the Hamilton Spectator, had an entire lineup willing to donate their time and talents. It was a long event that garnered over $40,000 in donations through ticket sales alone. I’ll give you the highlights…

Harlan Pepper
Tom Wilson and Stephen Fearing of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, took a break four songs into material by Wilson’s new band Lee Harvey Osmond, to introduce Wilson’s son and his band Harlan Pepper. Having garnered much deserved attention recently in the Hamilton scene, the boys charmed the shit out of the audience with their stripped down folk. Their opening song “Great Lakes” took a rhyming journey through the five bodies of water and was finished with a thanks to their creative writing teacher. Playing one more (“Reefer” – a dicey choice for the crowd) before giving the stage back to Wilson, the boys charmed.

Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland
Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland were adorable in a “you-make-music-and-then-go-home-and-pay-bills-together” kind of way. Married to McClelland in 2006, Doucet is a terror on guitar. Notes should be frightened of him. At any minute he may strike, and when he does, the kill will be so beautiful that onlookers will simply stare in wonder at the glorious sight. Doucet’s guitar playing had a bird-in-flight feel; at times twittered and agitated, at times gliding and soft, always with a punk-country denouement; a gentle perched landing. McClelland has a sweetness to her, like a less ragged-edged Kathleen Edwards. Her voice is kind and the songs were simple beauties.

Feist (and Friends)

Leslie Feist said she felt helpless sitting at home. “Fortunately, we can sing and raise some money.” The set brought surprises. First, Feist wasn’t the headliner… fair enough given her non-Hamilton lineage. Second, she performed backed by Joel Gibb of The Hidden Cameras on vocals and Toronto artist Bahamas on percussion. Third, the set was opened with Feist and friends providing backup vocals for Bahamas on one of his songs. After settling in, Feist gently flitted through a set drawn from 2007’s The Reminder that included “The Water,” “Sealion Woman,” “The Limit to Your Love,” and “Honey, Honey.” When Feist plays stripped down versions of her songs, you can’t help but have that “oh-my-god-I’m-falling-in-love-with-you-because-you’re-so-god-damn-talented” moment. That girl melts me.

The Arkells
With their album’s dirt-mall namesake sitting across King St. to the north it was fitting that the Arkells be the big name on the end of the night. Many of the 2000 seats (mostly filled by an older crowd) began to empty at this point, vacated as the Arkells began to play the only up-tempo rock of the event. Those of us ready for something louder sang along through “Pullin’ Punches,” “Ballad of Hugo Chavez,” “No Champagne Socialist.” They finished off with a thanks to Feist for ‘opening’ for them before breaking in to “John Lennon” which had there not been another act following, would have ended the benefit event with the line “And my piss barely makes the stall.” Awkward, yes, but the set was great.

The music is all well and good, but you need to do something other than reading this or attending local events. So, go here: http://www.canadaforhaiti.com/Forms/Donate.aspx and donate. After that, please be grateful for all that you have and the safety of those you love should they be so.

A Songbird Flies West to Edmonton...

The lovely and talented Miss Tannis Slimmon is gracing Edmonton with her presence once again after far too long away. The popular songbird comes all the way from Guelph to play the Blue Chair Cafe on February 18th, and the show sees her return to a city she has an obvious connection to, judging by the track entitled "Edmonton" on her recent release. Contact reso@bluechair.ca for reservations to what promises to be a spectacular sold out evening of acclaimed folk roots music in the City of Champions!

Tannis Slimmon

Tannis Slimmon's extensive musical career is populated with a swath of critical acclaim. The sweet sounding songbird brought home Contemporary Vocalist of the Year at the 2008 Canadian Folk Music Awards for her album 'Lucky Blue' and that barely scratches the surface of her professional career. Coming from generations of musical talent Tannis situated herself in Guelph, Ontario in 1980 and started writing, recording and touring regularly, including eleven years with the acclaimed trio The Bird Sisters. She struck off on her own in 2001 with her solo debut 'Oak Lake', and followed it up with 2007's award winning 'Lucky Blue'.

Both albums have been met by critical acclaim. In addition to the Folk Music Award, 'Lucky Blue' garnered the Independent Music Award for Best Folk/Roots Song for "Ernest, Charlie & Allan", a nomination for Best Folk/Roots Album from the same, a spot in the Top 10 Critics Albums of the Year by Penguin Eggs; Canada's Premier Folk/Roots Music Magazine, a Porcupine 'Golden Quill Award' for songwriting, and was 16th on the Galaxie Folk/Roots Channel's Top Spins of 2008. Lewis Melville was nominated for Producer of the Year for 'Lucky Blue' as well at the 2008 Canadian Folk Music Awards. Tannis' 2001 album 'Oak Lake' won the Porcupine award for Favourite Album of 2001 and the Orillia Folk Society's 'Songs for Living Rooms' for "There's A Lift".

Tannis Slimmon's beautiful voice has been featured on more than 74 albums, contributing harmony vocals for fellow musicians like Willie P. Bennett, Valdy and Rheostatics, and added her voice to the chorus on the Barenaked Ladies hit 'If I Had A Million Dollars'. Broadening her horizons even further, Tannis also traveled to Mali, West Africa in 2004 with a quartet of musicians exploring the role of music in development and appears in the documentary of the trip 'Road To Baleya', by Bay Waymen (Close Up Films). Picking up a the travel bug Tannis again went exploring to Matansas, Cuba and has subsequently hosted Malian musicians in her home for two summers. Keeping a steady pace in the music scene, Tannis continues to tour and is kicking off spring 2010 with a Home Routes Tour of Manitoba.

"A breathtaking vocalist with a bright, angelic disposition, Slimmon is a favourite folk attraction whose harmonies are as warm as her smile." - Exclaim Magazine

"...one of the most beautiful voices I have had the pleasure to listen to." - David Francey

'ROLLERSKATE' to The Marquee Room with Clea Roddick!

Clea Roddick

February 11: The Marquee Room, Calgary AB

Popular in many places, you may have heard about Clea Roddick. The Calgarian musician has conquered the TV licensing brigade and won the hearts of many through extensive radio play in the United States, but now the successful songbird is playing a show in her own city of Calgary. Don't miss this rare performance at the Marquee Room in Calgary on February 11th. Pick up your copy of her acclaimed album 'ROLLERSKATE' at the show or on KerfMusic.com

A teenage girl from rural Alberta climbed onto the Greyhound bus with a small baby and their entire possessions: two backpacks, a silver accordion and $50. Fast forward a few years and pan in on Clea Roddick: a performing songwriter who usually forgets to wear makeup (but sometimes puts a dab on at traffic lights en route to a gig), who lives in a halfway house for accordions and other keyboard instruments, who likes to walk in the bitterest cold to hear the snow 'scrunch' and grows a pumpkin patch in her backyard. With a 2010 record in pre-production, Clea continues to craft songs on a 100 yr old upright piano and records them in the garage-converted-studio (operated by her right hand man, Craig Newnes), while raising their two daughters.

Clea was recently supported by RAWLCO radio to release her first solo album. 'ROLLERSKATE' is a spirited disc full of hope and motivation for the human race. Groove-based themes which hint of environmentalism and bringing change with forgiveness, are threaded delicately alongside gentle tributes that offer a tender side to this compelling recording. 'ROLLERSKATE' is attracting a wide audience, charting on college and indie radio stations across the US and Canada (#1 in New York, NY, #1 in Queensburg, NY, #3 in Ithaca, NY, #5 in Montreal, QC), and being played on over 220 stations across North America. Songs from Clea's album have also been licensed by many prominent television programs in the US. MTV's 'The Real World' used Clea's song "Rocks and Weeds" in a January 2010 episode and MTV's 'The Hills, 'The City', 'Road Rules' and 'The Stylist', VH1's 'Tough Love', and E!TV's 'Keeping up with the Kardashians' and 'Khloe & Kourt Take Miami', have all licensed 'ROLLERSKATE' for use on their upcoming seasons.

Formerly fronting rock band Palm and Sago, Clea co-writes for other artists and is a published poet. She has a diploma in music from Selkirk College in BC. She won third place in the National Bliss Carman Poetry Contest (Prairie Fire Press/Banff Centre) and has been a finalist several times in the Calgary Folk Festival Songwriting contest and in various radio sponsored competitions. The Alberta songwriters compilation CD 'Beautiful Dreamers' features Clea alongside KD Lang, Ian Tyson and others with her performance of 'Happiness is Not for Sale' (Anne Loree).

"Structurally adventurous, yet alluring songwriting" - Mike Bell, Calgary Sun

"A sound that cannot be captured with words...not one throwaway lyric to be heard" - Mary-Lynn McEwen, FFWD Weekly

Wed. January 20: Duncan Garage Showroom, Duncan, BC
Tues. January 26: Cafe Deux Soliels, Vancouver, BC

The voice of Heather Blush is a gift to the ears. Smooth, sultry and captivating, the sound is somewhere between Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Harmer, and Heather is known for her clever lyrics that cover all bases from witty sarcasm to gutwrenching honesty. Energetic and engaging, the band is instrumentally gifted as well, Heather's guitar style appears effortless and the trio weaves together musical delights ranging from smoky blues to roots-pop. With the Uppercuts, "Captain" Steve Hazlett on drums and "Cannonball" Shane Sutherland on the upright bass, and both showcasing their own backing vocal skills on some tracks, this trio of friends packs a punch and leaves a lasting impression on every audience they meet.

Following up the success of the trio's first album VICE, a collection of songs focusing in on various "vices", Heather Blush and the Uppercuts were stoked to add their follow-up album and antithesis album, VERSA to the repertoire in 2009. Recorded by Rob Smith at Rocky Mountain Recording Studio in Calgary 'VERSA' is a little more sunny than its predecessor, while maintaining the bluesy roots pop sound that has brought the band much recognition. With such fun tracks as "Papaya, Papaya", an upbeat, fruit-laced love song; the fast talking ditty "Restless", which has been in heavy rotation on CBC's morning radio; and sweet bluesy numbers like "Speechless", it leaves listeners feeling intoxicated. 'VERSA' also medlies traditional tunes "When You're Smilin'" and "Smile" and covers the talented Trina Nestibo's tune, "Baby Its Late".

Heather Blush and the Uppercuts have had a busy year, touring the country and dipping toes in both the Atlantic and Pacific in May and June 2009, releasing 'VERSA' and taking the stage at Central Music Fest, Soulfest and Mountain View Music Fest in July and August. The band attended the OCFF Conference this year as well, as part of the Alberta Showcase, and have also recently showcasedat the Alberta Sessions in Calgary's Epcor Centre (2006 & 2008), and acted as house band on CBC Radio One's Homestretch. Appearing on various radio programs and television shows across Canada, being played as far away as Macedonia and the UK, and performing alongside Stephen Fearing, Ray Bonneville, and Maria Muldaur, Heather Blush and the Uppercuts have proven audiences can't get enough, and they are turning up their volume on the Canadian music scene. Be on the lookout for this smashing group who is sure to make their mark.

Owl Farm at the Indie Attic - Video

November 4th 2009 the Indie Attic stage was graced by Kingston Ontario's Owl Farm. This energetic 4 piece played an awesome mix of indie rock, psychedelic musings and stories about good, evil, and lobsters.

The night was a fantastic roller-coaster of entertainment with some amazing lead vocals from Owl Farm's organist JP, accompanied on back up vocals by non other than the band's drummer Jay. Matt and Chris kept it tight on Bass and Guitar through a awesomely rockin' set that you just couldn't possibly get through sitting still.

The Termights - The Indie Attic Video

Photo by: Heather Farmer - Indie Buzz Werks

What would happen if you combined The Monkeys with Blur and Weezer plus the drama of the Cabaret while wearing some fake mustaches? It would look and sound a lot like Ottawa's hilarious indie rock troop the Termights!

The comedic four piece sang their tunes Oct 21st at the Cajun Attic about being broke, pretty girls, and just how much life can suck… ideas that we can all relate to. But while their lyrics take a look at all the sad ironies of life, their music lifts it up and delivers the story with an energy and beat that puts a smile on your face and gets the whole audience moving.
