Live Review: Shout Out Out Out Out At The Rickshaw Theatre, Vancouver

It was a cold Friday night in the Main and Hastings area where many kids looking for a good time gathered at the fabulous Rickshaw Theatre ; a relatively new and much needed venue in Vancouver. The acoustics, friendly staff and fabulous management make any show seen there scrapbook / journal material. On the night’s bill was Edmonton’s dance-electro super-group Shout Out Out Out Out reppin' the 7-8-0 and supporting their most recent release Reintegration Time.

The evening began with Real Fake Diamonds, who were playing only their 5th show ever. They got the crowd going with their synth-pop beats, and impressive dance moves. Two of Real Fake Diamonds' three members are also members of Shout Out; one was sporting a TMPD shirt, a great Toronto band (on YYZ Records) who supported Shout Out on some of their recent shows back east. It is safe to say that Real Fake Diamonds sufficiently stimulated the crowd for what was to come.

The stage looked like the set of a 1950’s science fiction movie, with machines full of knobs and buttons. But instead of turning a man into a fly-human hybrid, Shout Out’s machines were made for making people dance. Shout Out hit the stage in a flurry of flashing lights, electro beats, high kicks, furry hats, friendly middle fingers and enough cowbells to satisfy Christopher Walken. It was easy to see that Shout Out were masters of their machines, and the craft of creating energy.

For close to 2 hours Shout Out took the crowd on a roller coaster ride full of suspenseful climbs, building potential energy and then releasing that energy in exhilarating dips and turns with their 3 synth, 2 bass (at times) and 2 drum set-up. The transfer from potential to kinetic energies was easily observed in the crowd’s collective shaking of asses. Yes ladies and gentlemen this was not your average thigh-slapping, toe-tapping, head-nodding show. If you had the pleasure of being at the Rickshaw Friday night, you were rocking out in anyway you saw fit, leaving a generous amount of perspiration on the theatre floor. Those in the crowd who didn’t consider themselves fans of electro-dance music before the show were quickly converted.

After Shout Out’s 15 minute encore, the kids spilled onto East Hastings street and floated home with dance beats now ingrained in their minds. Their first order of business was to procure the music that had just moved them, well maybe after they inhaled some of Uncle Fatih’s Pizza. According to their myspace Shout Out has no upcoming shows, but if in the future you get the chance to see them do not pass it up and if the spirit moves you, pick up their records. Also if you find yourself in Vancouver, check out a show at The Rickshaw.

Backstage with Shout Out Out Out Out

Last week I had the pleasure of talking to the guys from Shout4 before their show in Waterloo, Ontario. We met up just before/during their soundcheck (you can hear the drums and a little bit of vocals in the background from time to time) and talked about the tour, the new release, playing with 4 synth/bass players and two drummers, and even about their shoes.

I also recorded it.

You can listen to it a bunch of ways. It's part of a podcast series of mine which I'm going to be sharing with NxEW as well as with the radio show I do weekly in Waterloo.

John Doe and The Sadies @ Call the Office

London becomes a very different city this time of year. The flowers are in full bloom, the sun is shining, and most of the university and college kids have all gone home. The same can be said of Call the Office. Earlier in the week Shout Out Out Out put on a serious dance party that got plenty of young bums shaking. On Friday, Call the Office offered quite the change of pace with a throwback country show from John Doe and the Sadies which brought out the local crowd, with plenty of friendly faces from local indie radio station 94.9 CHRW.

The way the set took shape, it seemed like two shows in one. First the Sadies played rockabilly induced honky tonk. Country hooks gave way to extended guitar jams that were absolutely ferocious. Double guitar riffs were flying at breakneck speed, leaving no doubt that the Sadies sure know how to handle a guitar, let alone Dallas and Travis Good's bang-on lyrics and tone. The first portion of the set had an unmistakable punk flavour, ironic considering ex-punk rock god John Doe hadn't even taken the stage.

John Doe took centre stage looking dapper in a charcoal grey suit and a freshly cut hairdo. His musical contributions matched his throwback demeanor as he belted nostalgic country track after track. The pinnacle of the night's longing for a romantic love long passed was the song, “Husband and Wives” which Jon Doe sung with all the conviction of a longtime country singer who knows a thing or two about love. The older crowd could definitely relate and brought John Doe and the Sadies out for a well-received encore.

John Doe thanked opening band Young Rival (one of my favs) for putting on an excellent opening show as they so often do. They've opened for big names at CTO including the Von Bondies, where they stole the show. From the big name American band If you haven't heard of Hamilton's Young Rival be sure to check out their tunes because Young Rival's sound is as infectious as the swine flu.

See you at the shows,
Adam Szymanski

Shout Out Out Out Out/The Cansecos @ Babylon

My summer has kind of already started.
Last night I went to see Shout Out Out Out Out and the Cansecos.

Just have to say Shout OutX4 just blew me away and I never danced my butt off.

The first band was The Cansecos.
They were really great.
Enjoyed their electro-disco alternative rock sound.
I bopped to some of their tracks.
The Cansecos @ Babylon

While waiting for Shout OutX4 to set up on stage.
There were alot of equipment on stage.
It was insane, two drums, two keyboards and various electronics.
When they started, people just crammed near the stage.
Everyone were dancing away.
I never expected this show to be this amazing.
They were promoting their new album.
Lots of fun electro-dance beats.
Surely you have to check them out live.

A Very Canadian, Electro Spring

This spring, three of Canada's best indie electro acts are issuing new albums and touring, almost at the same time. Here are 3 bands releasing and touring almost simultaneously.

Edmonton's Shout Out Out Out Out have recently(March 4th) issued a new album dubbed Reintegration Time via Normals Welcome Records. Featuring guest vocals from San Serac and Cadence Weapon, this album reflects a little bit of the great Edmonton music scene and the way artists collaborate. This is just another excuse to go on a tour of debauchery across Canada, and from the looks of it all over the US also. The boys are currently making their way back up to Canada through the west coast after a busy weekend at SXSW. Check your local Canadian tour dates here: Official Myspace

Shout Out Out Out Out - Run

Vitaminsforyou is a Toronto based, Montreal schooled and Winnipeg born Canadian electro artist that just issued a new album via Raw Youth Records( on March 10th that is). He Closed His Eyes So He Could Dance With You is a dark, heavy opus full of dancefloor friendly electro pop romps. Bryce Kushnier (aka Vitaminsforyou) displays just how creative he’s become in the manipulation of beats and melodies electronically. I just saw V4U start their tour in Winnipeg a few nights ago. They are headed west, catch the rest of the tour dates here: Official Myspace

Vitaminsforyou - B4U

Last but not least, Hamilton Ontario's Junior Boys are issuing their latest at the begining of April through Domino Records. Tubbed Begone Dull Care, this new effort is more laid back and ambient, a sort of throw back to the Junior Boys of the pre-So This Is Goodbye era. The boys are starting their touring on March 28th with two back to back shows in Toronto, followed by a Canadian leg, then dropping south of the border only to finish in Europe. Ceck their Official Myspace for the rest of the dates!

Junior Boys - Hazel

This only proves how Canadians are truly becoming specialists of music that is mainly driven by electronic elements. Kudos to the bands above and all the others who are pushing the envelope!

Thanks to rocksellout.com and planetshhh.com for hosting the MP3s!
